Bespak has begun full scale production of the inhaler for Pfizer's Exubera inhaled powder insulin therapy in readiness for the US launch of the drug planned for this month.
West cracks cracking problem with needle tip caps.
A new polyisoprene formulation is being used by West Pharmaceutical Services for its needle shields and tip caps. The new material is said to significantly reduce the risk of cracking.
British prosthetic adhesive outperforms American alternatives.
An adhesive which can attach prosthetic devices to the skin has been developed by consultant clinical scientist Professor Alan Roberts, who has set up a company to market it.
Disposable plastics instruments fight CJD.
The European-funded Disblade project to develop disposal surgical instruments as a means of combatting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has been completed and is now seeking additional commercialisation opportunities. The project draws on the Hard-Plas technology developed by Rosti Technical Plastics.

The importance of medical moulding to tooling suppliers has increased the emphasis on supplying the medical sector at the forthcoming EuroMold 2006 exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, where a whole hall will be dedicated to medical tooling.

DuPont plans 2007 launch of nanocomposite series.
A family of thermoplastic nanocomposites is in development at DuPont for introduction next year. The materials will be targeted at automotive, electrical, electronic and industrial applications for which they are expected to bring higher performance, lighter weight and increased moulding productivity.
Nanoclay compounds improve barrier properties.
Performance compound specialist RTP Company has developed new nanoclay compounds designed to meet the stringent barrier demands in fuel system applications.
'Intelligent' textile for soft flexible body armour.
Dow Corning's Active Protection System soft armour consists of a three-dimensional spacer textile treated with a special coating, and remains soft and flexible under normal conditions but hardens instantly on impact. When the impact force is removed, the material returns to a flexible state.
PE cable compound is tough and flame retardant.
Borealis has a new halogen-free flame retardant compound for energy cable jackets. Its Casico FR6082 grade also provides high physical strength, toughness and good UV protection to polyethylene-based cable jackets.

Electromagnetic needle drive minimises cavity spacing.
Hasco has applied electromagnetic needle drive to a 32 impression hot runner tool to achieve extremely close cavity spacing. The drive is approved for clean room use and the component produced had a unit weight of 0·3 g.

Two linear robots and a sprue picker have been added to the Yushin range.

New Kuka Automation + Robotics Jet six axis robots for injection moulding may be mounted inverted or sideways on a rapid linear unit for tasks in which a long distance needs to be travelled, for example between an unloading station and a set down point.
Cutting sprue picker vibration shortens cycle times.
Delay before gripping the sprue with the new Wittmann W702 sprue picker is reduced and so cycle time is reduced because vibration of the removal arm on extension is minimised by a pneumatic shock absorber.
RFID technology matches end of arm tooling to robot operation.
An end of arm tooling recognition system using Radio Frequency Identification technology has been introduced by Wittmann for its R7 robot control.
Incoe and Beaumont increase melt flow control co-operation.
Incoe Corporation and Beaumont Technologies have formed a closer co-operation in the development of injection moulding flow control devices which will allow Beaumont to accelerate development and increase its understanding of shear effects on injection moulded products.
Cut nitrogen cost by generating it yourself.
Cost savings up to 90 per cent in nitrogen consumption are claimed by Domnick Hunter for its Maxigas range of nitrogen generators which produce nitrogen from compressed air by the principle of pressure swing adsorption.
Hot runner controller for small systems.
A new two-zone controller from Gammaflux Europe is intended to provide precise temperature control for small hot runner systems, as used with single- or twin-cavity moulds, or for tools with heated sprue bushes.
