Conductive compound 'as conductive as copper'.
ElectriPlast is a metal-filled compound billed as 'the most highly conductive plastic available on the market today'. Its conductivity comes from the use of micron-sized fibres which are not dosed in a 'salt and pepper' mixing process, but achieve a level of homogeneity not previously attained in such a compound, substantially increasing the surface area of the metal within the compound.
Electrical conductivity to meet explosion standards.
A series of conductive compounds has been developed by RTP Company for applications that must meet the requirements of both the ATEX Directive (94/9/EC) and EN 50014. Applications include an ATEX-compliant personal dust monitor for use in coal mines and a torch used at hazardous sites that had to comply with the ATEX directive.
Ticona on the road again.
This year's spring programme for the annual Ticona Engineering Thermoplastics Roadshow has the theme 'Your Bridge to the Future' and will focus on the latest trends and innovations in products, materials, production, recycling and legislation.
High flow material gets eco plaudits.
A high flow grade of BASF's Ultradur PBT not only reduces production costs, but is also sufficiently more environmentally friendly than higher viscosity grades to win itself an eco-label award. To demonstrate the advantages of a higher flow grade over a standard material under specific production conditions BASF has developed a computer program to calculate eco-efficiency.
Improved flow additive cuts cycle times by more than 10 per cent.
A fast-cycling additive has been incorporated in Ems-Grivory's Grilon B nylon 6 to shorten cycle times by more than 10 per cent in large-area components with long flow paths such as housing and cladding components.
Super Flow grade added for miniature connectors.
An even higher flow rate than already possible has been achieved in DSM's Stanyl nylon 46 for the production of electrical connectors. The new Stanyl 46SF5030 marks the beginning of a new series - Stanyl Super Flow - developed especially to meet the requirements of the new generation of connectors.
Low viscosity HNBR series is expanded.
The lower viscosity end of Lanxess's Therban hydrogenated nitrile rubber has been augmented with two additions to the Therban AT (advanced technology) line with easier mixing, faster throughput, better surface quality, lower plasticiser levels, reduced mould fouling and the option to apply higher filler loads.
More things to do with expandable polypropylene.
Five new grades have been added to BASF's Neopolen P expandable polypropylene foam family. The new products include coloured grades and smooth, light and low-cost versions.
PEEK on a roll as an adhesive tape.
An adhesive tape made out of PEEK has been introduced by Victrex as an alternative to PTFE and PI tapes. Compared with PTFE tape, Victrex claims a higher tensile strength, better wear performance in aggressive conditions, and lower density. When compared to PI tape, Victrex says PEEK has lower moisture absorption, better performance in strong alkaline environments, and higher tear strength.
Higher performance PVDF foam comes to market.
The new higher temperature resistant PVDF-based closed cell foam range from Zotefoams has now gone on sale as Zotek F HT. It offers an operational temperature limit of 160 degC, an improvement of 50 degC over the basic Zotek F range.
Foamed cable insulation in tune with 3G requirements.
Lower signal attenuation than previously possible with cellular materials is claimed for a new package of Borcell polyethylene cable products from Borealis, developed to cope with the higher operating frequency of 3G mobile phone antenna cables.
Microcellular elastomer simplifies vehicle suspensions.
Autothane microcellular polyurethane elastomer, developed specifically for vehicle suspension systems by Hyperlast, is simplifying the manufacture of suspensions on 4×4, sports utility and other truck-style vehicles. It enables an axle cushion to be mounted directly on the chassis to limit axle travel in a controlled manner, while allowing for compression at a predictable and progressive rate.
'Safe latex' outperforms untreated latex, and prevents allergies.
New test results have been published by Vystar Corporation in the USA to show that its Vytex natural rubber latex not only has significantly reduced antigenic protein levels but also has chemical and physical properties equal to or better than untreated commercially available latex.
Super-soft TPE is now optically clear.
An 'unprecedented' combination of ultra-softness and optical clarity is claimed for a new TPE range from Teknor Apex, which is transparent at hardnesses from 30 to 60 Shore 00 - well below the levels of conventional non-gel TPEs, which are measured on the Shore A scale.
New thermoplastic elastomer ranges from PolyOne.
PolyOne has added new thermoplastic elastomer grades for extrusion and multi-component moulding. Extrusion applications include roof seals, window seals, tubes and hoses for the construction and automotive markets. The multi-component moulding materials adhere well to ABS, PC, PC/ABS, PA, ASA, PVC and uPVC. A high melt flow makes the range suitable for long flow paths and thin wall moulding.
Over-moulding TPEs for clarity and nylon compatibility.
Two new ranges of TPEs for over-moulding from GLS Corporation in the USA offer clarity and adhesion to PC, ABS, PC/ABS, and COPE at a competitive price (Versaflex OM 9-802CL) and strong bonding to most types of standard and modified nylons (Versaflex OM 6200).
Greater freedom to use semi-crystalline nylon for eye-wear.
The European patent 837087, which for some years has restricted the use of Degussa's Trogamid CX semi-crystalline nylon to lenses, eyeglasses, and magnifying glasses, has been revoked, freeing the way to using the material for sports glasses and sunglasses.
Post-chlorinated PVC sheet and welding rod.
A higher than normal chlorine content gives better chemical resistance to Simona's PVC-C Corzan Industrial Grade sheets and welding rods. These are made of post-chlorinated PVC (PVC-C) with a chlorine content of some 67 per cent compared to a standard PVC with a chlorine content of 57 per cent.
PEEK's rigidity outperforms PTFE in chemical valve.
PEEK has replaced PTFE as a diaphragm liner in a back pressure valve because of its ability to withstand high temperatures. At temperatures up to 260 degC the PTFE would migrate toward one of the internal ports of the regulator and restrict the flow through the unit. PEEK is more rigid than PTFE and doesn't have a tendency to cold-flow or creep like PTFE.
Polycarbonate helps greenhouse roof open fully.
Makrolon polycarbonate from Bayer MaterialScience is being used to make the panels for what is believed to be the first fully automated greenhouse roof ventilation system. This uses injection moulded panels with a system of levers for opening and closing them. An advantage of the Makrolon construction is that the same material can be used to make the panels for the sides of the greenhouse.

Aramid gives extra durability to sulphur-cured rubber.
An aramid-based rubber additive that increases durability is currently being tested by major tyre manufacturers. Sulfron 3000 has been developed by Teijin Twaron from its Twaron para-aramid fibre.
