Lab lines planned for training on multi-layer film.
Blown film equipment capable of producing complex multi-layer films is being made available for customer trials and training by Brampton Engineering of Canada and Windmöller & Hölscher of Germany. Brampton is to install nine- and seven-layer lines - the seven layer using the company's downward-blowing AquaFrost process - while W&H's Extrusion Technology Centre has two seven-layer lines, one of which can be configured to produce nine layer film, alongside a three-layer line. Also in the new W&H lab is a Filmex nine-layer cast line equipped with eight extruders.
1,800 kg/hr cast stretch film line for Ukraine.
A Battenfeld Gloucester cast stretch film line has been delivered to a Ukrainian company to make 3 m wide 5-layer film for simultaneous production of six 500 mm rolls at up to 600 m/min in thicknesses from 12 to 50 microns.
Infra red dryers are part of $1 m South African PET sheet project.
UPM Machinery Sales has liaised with the UK branch of Taiwanese thermoforming sheet line producer Sunwell Global to produce a $1 m turn key line for Zibo Containers of South Africa to make PET sheet for forming into fruit boxes. The co-extrusion line is based on a 120 mm main extruder and 65 mm co-extruder. Material is fed through UPM's IRD infra red dryer which dries it to 50 ppm at 700 kg/hr in one pass.
PLA pitch for phone and store cards.
After making increasing headway in packaging products, biodegradable polylactic acid is to be used to make prepaid phone cards. NatureWorks PLA is being incorporated as the base sheet material which makes up 95 per cent of a phone card by UV Color of the USA. The earthsource branded cards are also wrapped in PLA film for multi-pack distribution.
PP sweet wrap runs at a tonne an hour.
Italian manufacturer Gruppo Colines has built its highest output multi-layer cast polypropylene line for a South American company. The Polycast line is making five-layer CPP film, 2,100mm wide and has achieved an output of 1,050 kg/hr.
New German producer of twin wall PP.
A new company, KIBO-Plastics, has started up in Germany making twin wall polypropylene sheet. There are three products with differing internal structures.
More capacity for water soluble film.
Production capacity at soluble film producer MonoSol AF in Hartlebury, Worcestershire, is to be increased as part of an expansion plan by its US-based parent MonoSol.The expansion will include a new blown film line.
Berstorff adds lines for standard packaging sheet.
Berstorff is now building standard thermoforming sheet lines for packaging applications.
Memory printed on plastic film.
An electronic memory device printed on a plastic film has been prototyped by a Japanese research group. The device retains a two-digit drain current on/off ratio for more than 10 days after power is turned off.
Approval certificate 'means winder safety can be trusted'.
Windmöller & Hölscher claims to be the first manufacturer to offer a film winder with a GS approval certificate, based on the German equipment and product safety act and the EU Machinery Directive 98/37/EG.
Small scale calender is redesigned.
Battenfeld's Calandrette alternative to a calender for the production of small or medium-sized batches of PVC film has been revamped and is now available in two new sizes with an extended performance range.
Shrink film line will integrate calendering and stretching.
A line for shrink sleeve film to be brought into service by Italian PVC film and sheet specialist Alfatherm later this year will use a proprietary one-step process to integrate film calendering and stretching.
Davis-Standard builds on Black Clawson control technology.
The integration of Davis-Standard and Black Clawson in May last year to form Davis-Standard Converting Systems Group has brought Black Clawson control technology into the Davis-Standard film and sheet equipment range with the aptly-named Integrator system. Integrator PRO combines total line control and data monitoring into a single point of control and Integrator C is being offered as a replacement for existing Egan CMR control units.
Piovan dedicates temperature control to extrusion.
A range of temperature controllers has been designed specifically for extrusion by Piovan. They have heating capacities up to 80 kW and the water or oil is pumped at high flow and high pressure.
Linear motor improves control of re-winder contact roll.
A Brückner Liwind system, which uses a linear motor instead of hydraulics to control motion and contact pressure of the contact roll, has been installed on a 10 m BOPP line at Manuli Film in Italy.
PE film grade combines toughness with processability.
A new polyethylene grade for blown film production has been introduced by Nova Chemicals for film needing premium toughness and high seal strength without sacrificing processability.
Process aid speeds up PP film production.
A process aid for polypropylene from Viba of Italy is recommended for both blown and cast film, and for BOPP production to increase melt flow and therefore give a higher extrusion speed.
Fast film cuts costs.
Getting high throughput by running small capacity lines very fast can lower both capital and operating costs. Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik has demonstrated a line consisting of 75 mm and 45 mm extruders and downstream running at 900 kg/hr of PP and 1,100 kg/hr of PS.

Three new transparent armour laminates for glazing applications have been produced by GE Advanced Materials for buildings, armoured vehicles, banks, government offices or wherever personal protection and security are required.
Wardle Storeys takes laminating in-house.
After sending its PVC fabrics and films out to flame laminators for many years, Wardle Storeys has now installed a Web Processing laminating machine to perform this process in-house.
In-line thermoforming gets faster.
In-line thermoforming machines have been developed by Amut to produce 180,000 cups per hour.
AUTOMATION & ROBOTICS

Yushin adds robots for use on 100 - 5,000 tonne moulding machines.
Three new Webliner beam type take out robots have been introduced by Yushin for injection moulding machines in the 100 to 220, 1,000 to 1,600 and 1,500 to 5,000 tonne ranges. And the company has also introduced the SXA-300 series of side entry robots for use where machines are operated in clean rooms or where ceiling height is limited, and suitable for 180 to 450 tonne machines.
Automation cells for multiple finishing operations.
Forward+Thompson has developed cell structures for demoulding and secondary finishing operations requiring six-axis robotic handling which can be installed beside the press or for free-standing independent operation.
Ductless design saves space.
The new TM Robotics TH1050 four axis horizontal SCARA robot is built without a cable duct which cuts down the necessary installation space.
Automation is growth business for Sandretto.
Sandretto supplies several variants of the Dal Maschio robot range and supplies a kit of gripper parts with every robot, enabling customers to make their own grippers according to need. More specialist applications for Sandretto automation include in mould labelling, and complex operations requiring six-axis handling for which Sandretto has teamed up with Kawasaki.
More advanced software supports latest robots from ABB.
The Safe Home Run is a feature of ABB's latest programming and control software RobotWare Plastics - Mould. It retains a spatial picture of the robot's operating envelope and enables the robot to move from anywhere in that envelope back to a designated safe position without collisions. So in the event of an unforeseen stoppage the robot does not have to be jogged through movements to clear difficult areas.
Wittmann extends the 7-Series.
Mid-sized linear robots have been added to Wittmann's 7-Series with payloads of 10 to 35 kg and suitable for mounting on injection moulding machines up to 1,200 tonnes.
Automated IR welding system replaces glueing, cuts time and emissions.
An automated infra red welding system with Heraeus Noblelight emitters has been installed at Lichfield-based Hepworth Drainage to make a polypropylene inspection chamber in a cycle time of about 22 seconds, considerably faster than achieved by the previous glueing process.
Air, power and coolant connected in one click.
A system for the simultaneous connection of air, cooling fluids and electricity has been developed by Stäubli and its sister company, Multi-Contact.
Tool changer knows where tools are and what to do if they break.
A new tool change station has been introduced for KMT Cutting Systems' six-axis robotic Cutting Box Routing systems which allows tools to be changed while the routing system is in operation. It also offers an automatic update of tool parameters when a tool is changed.

Battenfeld Injection Molding is gearing up for commercial production of ceramic screws for injection moulding machines to resist wear from abrasive and corrosive materials.
Fanuc raises its sights on electric machine sales.
Japanese injection moulding machine manufacturer Fanuc has raised its targets for sales of all-electric machines in Europe with a new joint venture company with its long-time distributor Mitsui.
Hybrid Negri cuts energy costs at Wicks.
The largest Negri Bossi PX machine in the UK at 330 tonnes has been installed at Wicks Plastics in Bolton.

The new vertical fully-hydraulic Allrounder 175V is Arburg's first machine for insert encapsulation to be available as a standard model and is reminiscent of the kinds of machines first built by the company 50 years ago.

Biodegradables for barrier bottles?
Barrier bottles made from plastics from renewable sources instead of PET are being researched by NatureWorks, which makes polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable plastic made from corn starch.
Blow moulding TPV ups heat resistance.
A new blow moulding grade of thermoplastic vulcanisate that withstands much higher service temperatures has been introduced by Zeon Chemicals for high-temperature automotive boots, bellows and ducts, replacing the earlier options of rubber or heat shielding.

The forthcoming RoHS Directive, which will limit the use of some materials used in plastics additives, has significant implications. Tin research, development and marketing organisation Tin Technology warns that many companies are still unaware of the full implications of the Directive but should now be taking the necessary steps to meet the deadline date.
FR nylons notch up approvals and certification.
Conformation to RoHS and WEE is assured for new UL-certified glass filled flame retardant halogen- and phosphorus- free nylons from Frisetta.
Distrupol electrical comparator simplifies selection.
Distrupol has added an Electrical Performance Comparator Card to its toolbox of aids for designers and moulders engaged in the development and production of electrical components.
New conductive compound has high impact strength.
A conductive compound with particularly high impact strength for heavy-duty injection moulded products requiring permanent static-safe performance has been introduced by Cabot Corporation.
Improved sealing compounds for low temperatures and higher mechanicals.
New fluoropolymer compounds from Parker Hannifin and Dyneon bring new extremes of operation for hydraulic seals while a new-found ability to injection mould it brings Lanxess EVM into the frame.
Long fibre concentrates cut compound requirements.
There is a growing trend to use dilution technology when injection moulding glass-filled materials to reduce the quantity of compounded material used by diluting a concentrated long glass fibre compound with the PP at the injection moulding stage. Borealis has recently introduced a combination of a concentrate and base polymer with which to blend it, while RTP has produced a concentrate which it says is the most highly filled available.
SMC replaces metal fabrications.
The thermoset load-bearing support frames introduced by Control Techniques are said to be a first for the large AC variable speed drives industry. The frames are produced by compression moulding polyester sheet moulding compound and replace the painted sheet metal fabrications that are conventional in the industry.
Arkema focuses fuel line technologies.
Arkema has grouped its entire range of automotive fuel line multi-layer systems under the new trademark Rilperm. At the same time, the company is introducing a new nomenclature to designate the various Rilperm grades.

Smaller beads for Arcel mouldable foam.
Nova Chemicals has introduced a new version of its Arcel 730 mouldable foam material with a smaller bead size that improves performance and expands the range of packaging applications. The 25 per cent reduction in size places Arcel materials in the same bracket as expandable polystyrene beads.

New process for carbon nanotubes widens their commercial potential.
The cost of making carbon nanotubes on an industrial scale has been reduced by a process developed by Bayer MaterialScience, which is planning to market the material as Baytubes. Applications are expected in making a plastic moulding electrically conductive so that it can be painted without any further pre-treatment, incorporation in films for anti-static packaging materials, and the electromagnetic interference shielding of computer and mobile telephone housings.
Ciba ties up silver antimicrobial technology.
Ciba Specialty Chemicals has acquired exclusive access to antimicrobial technology based on high porosity elemental silver through a new marketing co-operation with Bio-Gate Bioinnovative Materials of Germany.

The latest release of Delcam's CopyCAD reverse engineering program makes it easier to get from scan data to mould design, thanks to new functions, which include the ability to flatten 3D triangle models into 2D shapes and an extra wrapping option, together with significant speed improvements throughout the program.
