Metallised mouldings will be produced fully-automatically
A fully automatic plant for producing metallised injection mouldings is scheduled to start up in May at Balda in Germany. It integrates a Singulus 3DS cathodic vaporisation (sputtering) system with one of Balda's injection moulding machines, with moulded components being removed from the machine and transferred to the metallising system for the application of a metallic surface, and then to the non-scratch coating process, fully automatically and without any manual intervention.

Plasma: the fourth state of matter
Plasma treatment to improve adhesion on a surface involves destroying a gas - normally air - with a high electric charge and spraying its molecular detritus on to the surface. This alarming-sounding operation once had to be kept under control in a vacuum enclosure, but there is now a technique for plasma treating in the open air with a device akin to a blow torch. Dipl Ing Christian Buske and Dr Alexander Knospe of Plasmatreat describe their company's Openair plasma process.
